To incorporate service learning into some of the social studies units I teach throughout the year in hopes that students will gain critical thinking, problem solving, and social skills through real world experiences.
What's Your Source?
An Integrated Service Learning Unit
Slide Show
This slide show was created for a graduate level course I was taking while my students and I were working on the "What's Your Source?" Project. The course, EML 595- Seminar in Middle Level Education, explored the best practices in middle level education. Please click on the link below to see a PDF of the slide show.
The following are a few of the rubrics used as scoring tools for the teachers and guidelines for the students as they completed some of the components of the project. Again, please click on the links below.
Although I only have two samples of finished student work in digital form in this portfolio, please let me know if you would like to see more samples as I do have a few more in actual paper copies. Also, please check out the link to the research wiki that the students used throughout the researching process. Thanks!
Please scroll over to view a short video created from photos taken while the students were sharing their work at the energy fair.
A News Worthy Event
When we were getting our students ready to invite anyone they thought might want to know a little more about energy sources to our energy fair, one student thought that getting a news reporter to come might be a good way to get the word out about his source. He invited WABI TV 5, and they accepted his invitation. Click on the link below to read the article and watch the news story.
Here I have included two student reflections, one from a 7th grader and one from an 8th grader, concerning the project as whole. The students wrote about what they thought about the process of the project as well as their final products.
Our Energy Unit got accepted to be presented at the annual NELMS conference in April 2012. Here is the descriptor as it was shown in the program:
The entire experience was fantastic. We had about 35 people show up for our session. Many had questions because their schools were moving in a project based, expeditionary learning direction. We were able to share our experience with this project, but also with the integrated units we have completed since last fall.
2010-2011 Professional Portfolio Goal:
To incorporate service learning into some of the social studies units I teach throughout the year in hopes that students will gain critical thinking, problem solving, and social skills through real world experiences.
